Sp2 Installation
Hi
I am currently using vista home premium SP1 For several weeks having problems with installating SP2 and wondering if someone can have a look of my HJT log and check if there might be something which could be the cause why I am unable to install it. Exactly what preparations did you do before attempting to install?
Is you copy of Vista legal? What happens when you do try to install? When you try the install do you have ALL security program, and I mean ALL, turned completely off? Are you attempting this by a direct automatic download and install or are you doing it the recommended way, download the upgrade to the computer desktop. Then disconnect from the internet, close ALL unnecessary programs, including ALL the security programs AND Including that totally unnecessary registry cleaner program, then do the install? Did you get the upgrade from Microsoft itself, where you should have gotten it, or from a P2P download? |

SP2 Installation
HI
Thanks for your response. I will try my best to supply details which you request. My copy of Vista is legal. The attachments should give some idea of what is taking place even though they are not necessarily in order which they were notified. Regarding whether security program is turned off or not, the answer is no. Somewhat confused regarding direct automatic download/install, recommended way and download upgrade to desktop. Upon your response I will then proceed to proceed to do what you mentioned i.e. disconnecting from internet etc. One question h/ever, which has always bothered me is what can be considered unnecessary programs. Regarding upgrade from Microsoft, can I assume that you are asking as to whether my Vista is an upgrade from another system? The answer is no. PC was acquired with Vista preinstalled. I am trying to carry out the procedure as per Windows Update which shows upon checking if there are any updates to be installed. (Recommended way I assume). You will no doubt tell me if that is correct. |

You can download the update and SAVE it to install later rather than automatically download and install. This is the way I always do large updates such as this one. This is certainly recommended for those on dial up or slow connections which may time out during long processes such as this one. Plus it is also a way to absolutely assure that nothing unnecessary is running during the update process. Unnecessary programs would be ANY program not required to run the computer: Security programs, email programs, IM programs, printers, scanners, photo programs, office programs, wireless programs, other updating programs, media players, games, etc. Anything that you don't need to actually run the computer. Now here are the steps given on the HP website on what to do before installing SP2. I have no idea who your computer manufacturer is but these very same steps can be found on ANY manufacturer's website because they would be exactly the same for every computer, no matter who is the manufacturer. I am using these just because they were the easiest to find. Where it says BIOS updates, driver patches and updates this would apply to your specific computer manufacturer. When getting driver updates you need to go to the website of your computer manufacturer for computer updates and the manufacturer of your video card, audio components, disks drivers, etc., to get those. Quote:
Lastly, considering the error code showing in one of your attachments, it is possible that you have one or more corrupt system files on the computer which could be stopping this installation. This would mean that you may have to do a repair installation of Vista SP 1 before proceeding or at least run the System File Checker or follow the instructions given HERE though you will have to reinstall all previous updates after that again before proceeding to SP2. You may also want to run the Vista Readiness Tool to see if your system is ready for this update. Hopefully I have answered most of your questions. If you have anymore or still have difficulty please post and I will do what I can to help. Judy |

SP2 Installation
Hi Judy
I am in the process of sorting out the details of your last input. As a novice, it will perhaps take me longer than expected so please bear with me. H/ever I carried out SFC test as suggested and the result is attached. I proceeded to locate the file as per result and attachment as you see is inconlusive because as quoted I do not have privileges to access the file. Can you possibly explain why am I unable to access the file and how can that be achieved in order to possibly acquire further information. I also ran the Vista Readiness Tool. It appeared to take a rather long time. Upon completion there was no info during the process. What is normally the progress bar, did not show anything, but it eventually indicated the operation was complete. Is it normal that progress does not show. |

The logs really aren't going to tell you much. What you need to run is CheckDisk.
To do this do the following: 1. Open the Start Menu. 2. Click on the Computer button. 3. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. 4. Click on the Tools tab. 5. Click on Check Now under the Error checking section. 6. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt. 7. Make sure both options are checked. (See screenshot below) NOTE: The Automatically fix file system errors box will be checked by default. 8. Click on the Start button.9. You will get a pop-up window saying, "Windows can't check this disk while it's use". (See screenshot below) 10. Click on the Schedule disk check button for chkdsk to run the next time you restart your computer. Reboot the computer. |

Hi
I ran Checkdisk twice but having a problem as far as viewing the results. First time just let it run i/o remaining at PC. Second time endeavoured to see the conclusion. What appeared only did so for short period. Not long enough to really take in what took place. Did a search within google to find some info where such results could possibly be stored but what I did find was not very precise. Are you able to advise where such results can possibly be found. Upon finding results, I will then proceed to do in detail your previous instructions. Tks |

Go to Start > Run and type: eventvwr.msc /s , and hit enter.
When Event Viewer opens, click on "Application", then scroll down to "Winlogon" and double-click on it. This is the log created after running Checkdisk. |

SP2 Installation
Hi Julie
Sincere apologies for such late response. Frustration and exhaustion was perhaps the main cause. Having tried so often without any joy it really got on top of me and I more or less gave up. Having said that I decided to give it one final go bearing in mind that I had already made a positive decision to give WIN 7 a bash. As a result I proceeded to pre order a copy which as you know was not due out until 22nd Oct. Before acquiring the disc I made a final effort to download SP2 once again and blow me cold it installed without any hitches. How about that. Now that I have WIN 7 in my possession I am in the process of backing up the necessaries as I intend to do a clean install as opposed to upgrade bcs of the problems which I have had with vista. Tks for your efforts and apologies once more for late response |
