I recently bought a Razer Diamondback 3G mouse. I installed it and it worked perfectly. Until about 2 weeks ago, when i noticed that from time to time when i lifted the mouse of my mat the cursor would go crazy around my screen, mainly to the left side of my screen and now more recently to the right side of my screen aswell.

Now it doesnt do this all the time but more than half the time now and its getting annoying, especially when im playing an online game (ie Call of Duty 4), i lift my mouse to adjust my wrist and mouse and the cursor goes all over the place on the screen until i place the mouse back down on the mat and it stops.

I have the latest driver installed for this mouse. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening.

Make sure there are no pieces of fuz or dust in the mouse sensor area

While you're at it.. A common problem with optical and laser gaming mice odd movments is due to the mousing surface getting shiny from use, or there are contrasting colors/shades on the surface that read funny when the mouse is moved over them..

Try using a different mousing surface, a darker material, or less reflective surface, so the laser does not bounce off the surface and back into the sensor when it is lifted off the surface to reposition the mouse.

If your mousing surface has become "polished" from use, if it's a cloth surface, clean it off with a slightly damp rag/mild dish washing detergent and let it dry completely before using it again.. also wash your hands well with a good dishwashing liquid detergent etc before using the mouse, that way there will be less hand/finger oils to rub off onto the mousing surface... You got a solid surface? a good scrubbing with some dish detergent and a non abrasive dish-scrubber can cut down on the "polish/reflectivity"

My mouse mat is a Razer Goliathus and i bought that at the same time i bought the mouse, if thats any help?

I wouldn't know; I have a G5 and intellipoint 3.0; use an old T-shirt, previously used a logitech optical wheel mouse "cheapo" on a t-shirt. I remember my mouse going all crazy a couple times and found some stuff in the sensor area.

Well ive wiped the mouse mat and ive blown the optical lense as much as i can as i cant open it, not sure how to yet.

But its still going crazy, but its not all the time, but still more often that not.

Does it happen only when you lift the mouse off the mousing surface?

Another thing that you might look at is in the control panel/mouse properties under "pointer options" see if "enhance pointer precision" is checked, if it is, try unchecking it. This seems to disable mouse pointer acceleration and should prevent the mouse pointer from making exagerated movments out of small inputs. Try to keep the mouse pointer movement speed in the default position as well.. These settings should provide the most accurate/consistant mouse movement.

Yes it only happens when i lift the mouse of the mouse mat.

I had a look a the "enhanced pointer precision" and it was already unchecked.

Your issue sounds purely like a optical issue; Either the sensor lens is dirty, use a q-tip to clean it out after blowing off loose particles, or the mousing surface is too reflective, is it cloth or plastic?

Try using a plain t-shirt draped over your mouse pad and see what happens.... also try a piece of binder paper, some plain white printer paper etc.. test different surfaces..

Refraction off the surface of something shiny/clear back into to the sensor will caus an exeggerated movement response.

I don't know what else it could be unless you added another driver/usb device recently that might change the USB resonse?

Only thing I can suggest is looking through some of the google search results for "laser mouse pointer jumping around"

I couldn't find anything specific to issues when lifting the mouse but I know it does happen, I remember my brothers mouse did this when lifting and repositioning, it had to do with the mouse pad.. I think his was a death adder? I do hope that your mouse is not failing, and it's something simple that you can fix, good luck with it... If you find a solution can you post what you found?
