Hi, I have a problem with some viruses that I just can't get rid of. My computer keeps going through super slow lag spikes, but then it runs just fine. I've run spybot, avg, ad-aware, and advanced system care multiple times. Each time the same few problems kept popping up, but then nothing was found at all, even though the viruses were still there.

I've even gone into safe mode and tried deleting some of them manually, to no avail. I did run avg and advanced system care in safemode though which found a bunch of problems. I've gone through the list of instructions to do, and it seems to be running a little better but it still has issues. Your time and help is greatly appreciated.

Looks like you got infected with vundo; You have a file sharing application running, it's important to note that we do not generally provide support for computers that are used for file sharing. It is shuned apon due to it being a possible outlet for piracy and usually leads to re-infection.

If you want further help in cleaning up the computer I'd suggest uninstalling limewire;

follow the instructions on cleaning; particularly re-run step 8 for mbam, where it says "Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected"

WhatPulse 1.6 appears to be a type of keylogger that can connect to the internet via port 80, it could be dangerous, I'd suggest uninstalling it if you do not need it, or do not know what it is...

Also viewpoint media player could be vulnerable to infections via automatically downloading and executing malicious web content.

What is Viewpoint Manager?

Viewpoint Manager (viewmgr.exe) is a file associated with either the Viewpoint Media Player or Viewpoint Toolbar. It manages the downloads and updates of the Viewpoint products. According to Viewpoint, the manager program will check for new updates once a day.

Viewpoint Media Player is a browser plug-in that enables users to view rich media content on the web. The player is used for AOL © Instant Greetings, AIM Themes, and other web applications. In other words, its similar to other programs like Flash, Quicktime, RealPlayer and other applications.

The Viewpoint Toolbar is a search application powered by Yahoo!. Neither the toolbar or media player are required by Windows to operate, they are merely add-on programs to the web.

Is Viewpoint Manager or associated programs considered spyware?

Since the Viewpoint programs do not track, collect, or sell information they are not considered spyware.

How did Viewpoint Get On My Computer?

This is probably why you came to this page in the first place, you noticed Viewpoint on your computer and didnt know you installed it. Well, this is because Viewpoint installs itself with various other programs such as AOL ©, AOL © Instant Messenger, Netscape, certain Adobe applications, and other programs on the web that require the media player to show their content.

Now if you are note using AOL © Instant Messenger or any other programs that use Viewpoint Media Player, you should be able to uninstall it without disrupting any applications. In this case, follow the steps below to remove Viewpoint.

How to Remove Viewpoint Media Player, Toolbar, or Manager

1) Right-click on the clock in your taskbar and choose Task Manager
2) Click on the Processes tab and search for VIEWMGR.EXE, if its found, click on it and then click End Task to close it
3) Click on Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
4) Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint

Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Viewpoint Toolbar
5) Close the Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel
6) Restart your computer

Warning: If you install AOL © Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere plugin, or another program that requires Viewpoint, it will download and install again.

Once you have performed step 8 and mbam is able to remove the infected files, you will need to save another mbam log, to show the infections removed, or if any are missed, then once restarted, run another hijackthis scan/log and repost new logs.

There will be more instructions on dealing with vundo; it's an agressive malware/adware trojan that makes lots of changes to the registry and lots of copies of itself in various folders.

Okay, thank you for your help. I rarely use limewire so I uninstalled it like you suggested. Also, I wasn't aware that the viewpoint media player was even on my computer, let alone dangerous, so thanks for the heads up on that one. WhatPulse is just a program that logs how many keystrokes/clicks you use every day, and it doesn't actually keep track of your keys, so it's not too dangerous.

I re-ran mbam and it seemed to effectively remove most of them except a couple, and I'm not sure if they were deleted on reboot since there is still an infection showing up in hijack. I attached the logs as you requested. Thanks again.

Get it and save it somewhere easy to remember, restart the computer in safemode; Run Mbam again after rebooting into safemode, to check if it deleted the files listed in the log as "delete on reboot" as per the instructions in the sticky; rebooting into safemode with restore disabled; after re-running Mbam, to check the files, or remove additional infections, rebooting and go back into safemode, run the symantec vundo removal tool, when it finishes, check to see if there is a report on what it did; try to save it or copy and paste it into notepad and save it as symantec.txt; reboot again into safemode and run hijack this, if you see the following entries; "these are from your HJT log above"

Then reboot into normal mode and run MBAm, save a log, Hijackthis again and save another hijackthis log, then repost the symantec.txt, mbam log and hijackthis log.

Okay, so I went into safemode and ran mbam and it only found the registry infection, not the file. Yet, unlike usually saying "Delete on reboot" (which it never gets deleted), it said "Quarantined and deleted successfully" so I thought that I had gotten rid of it. I then restarted it and ran the FixVundo, which did not find one single infection. So I restarted anyways, and then I ran hijack and that also showed that the infection was gone.

To my dismay, when I started back up in normal mode and ran mbam, I saw that the two infections were present again, and still said "delete on reboot". So I restarted and ran hijack and sure enough, the infection was still there. I'm lost at what to do here, thanks again for your help though.

ok, from normal boot mode run MBam, make sure it's updated, then have it fix any issues that it finds, if it asks to reboot, do so. After it reboots run Mbam again and check to see if the infection returned, don't have mbam fix anything this time, just use it to find the infected file/registry entry.. Then run hijackthis, scan and creat logfile; then look for the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Yqebebeva] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\isabogiseyite.dll",e

or something like that; It will usually be the same name/s as the entry/s shown in your latest mbam log. If you see them in your hijack this scan, check the box next to the entry and have hijack this fix the issue; then run MBAM after running the hijackthis fix.. Have mbam fix any issues that it finds. Killing the entries in hijackthis should allow MBAM to delete the files without rebooting, but it's only removing the recently created files/registry changes, rather than finding and deleting the malware that is creating the files.. If it happens over and over like this, the infection may be in the form of a rootkit.

If nothing is found, try the vundofix application from normal mode. See if vundofix finds anything; then try rebooting into normal mode and run MBAM once again to see if the infection returns. If it does. It most likely will keep on returning since neither application is finding the malware that is creating the new files.. You may need another couple of applications, crapcleaner and combofix are two recommended applications to help deal with vundo.. You can run crapcleaner on your own and have it fix any issues that it finds, provided you follow the crapcleaner instructions, and know how to configure it's MANY settings, to suite your needs. I have a couple posts on running and configuring crapcleaner on here somewhere. I will quote the instructions to this thread once I find them.

Combofix requires specific instructions from someone that knows how to use it; I'm not certain of the process, it would be best if jholland "Judy" or another forum staff member takes a look into helping with your issue. I may have muddied the water, but no more than following the instructions posted in the before you post for help sticky.. so it's best to post any new Mbam logs/hijackthis logs that you have created while trying to fix the issue since this post.. That way we can backtrack what has been found so far.

I have asked for help on this one from other staff volunteers as I don't usually provide help in here, the anti-spyware/malware stuff seems to be mostly greek to me, although it's becoming easier, I still don't know all the tricks..

Hi, sorry have been away and just dropped in tonight. Let's hold off for the moment on Combofix.

Update MBA-M again. Run a Full system scan with it and have it Remove Everything found.
DON'T run it in SAFE MODE. MBA-M is not meant to be run in Safe mode.

Reboot the computer.

Then do the following:
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

Reboot the computer.
Run a new Full System Scan with HJT and please copy/paste your MBA-M log, your ESET log and your HJT log.
Then we can decide if we need to run Combofix.

Before I give any more fixes, did you reboot the computer after both the ESET and MBA-M scans? Did you tell ESET to fix what it found? If not please run it again and do that.
Did you personally add those listings to the Trusted Zones?

Yes, I rebooted after everything, it just keeps coming back. The sites listed as trusted are my motherboard so I'm pretty sure it's okay.

Ok, then you should do the following:
The first thing you should do is print out this guide as we will close all the open windows and programs, including your web browser, before starting the ComboFix program.



download ComboFix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe), You will get a prompt asking if you want to run or save the file. Choose SAVE and save it to the desk top. DO NOT RUN it YET
We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

* Close all open Windows including this one.
* Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.

Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete.
Windows may issue a prompt because ComboFix does not have a digital signature. This is perfectly normal and safe and you can click on the Run button to continue.
ComboFix is now preparing to run and when it has finished you will see the Disclaimer screen you should press the number 1 key and then press the enter key to continue.
ComboFix will create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry.
Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will disconnect your computer from the Internet. Therefore, do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet as your connection will be completely restored at a later stage in the program.

ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to what they were previously. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan.

When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically
You should now post this log here when all is complete.

That's looking good. Only a couple of noname (file missing) entries and some updater/startup/services that you could turn off to save some resources, till you need the applications. See what Judy has to say about the combofix log/current progress.

Well to me it looks like the infection's gone.Nope. Not so fast. You are using msconfig to stop some start up items, you need to go back in there and enable all so we can see what those are and run another Full Scan and post that log. Plus, More work to do with Combofix. I'm working up a script you will need to run. Back ASAP.

Looks pretty good. You can Uninstall Combofix, it is not needed anymore:


Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

You have some items stopped from auto starting by using msconfig. Can you go back in there and re-enable those so we can see what those might be? Then I can give you the final steps to take with HJT.

Several things you can do to stop the auto starting programs, msconfig really isn't one of them. It should be considered a trouble shooting program.
CodeStuff Starter (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/Starter.html) is an excellent FREE program to control unnecessary auto startups and also unneeded auto starting services.
Download and install, very simple to use. When you open the program you will see three tabs, Startup, for auto starting programs, Processes, which works like Task Manager but also gives you the info on what other processes are tied to a specific running process and Services for auto starting services. All you do is remove check marks from the programs you don't want auto starting close the program and reboot.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service - this program too can be uninstalled. Just isn't the program it used to be. This service runs even in the free version but does nothing.
