frodo 02-01-2009, 03:29 PM i am getting green lines in the screen, that progressivly get worse till the screen goes completly white...then,,,as i close the screen [lap top]
i noticed the screen comes back..like a loose wire
then..i left the pc on with the top open. the screen was white
i could hear the sound it makes ,when you sign on
screen still white..then the screen goes black..supposed to after ? minutes
but..after the screen goes black, i hit enter and i am back on again
screen is clear and good..whats up? virus or memory playing out?
pk right now..looking at screen...green blinking spot right in the middleand
behind the window, like the screen behind this one is corupted
but this window is ok..makes me think virus..computer is old
need a new one, dont have the bucks..what you think??
S Templar 02-01-2009, 05:39 PM Hi I'd check your internal connections.
Could be a loose Video card.
Turn the computer off and disconnect it from the power
Take off the side of the case and touch the bare metal chassis to discharge static.
Remove Video cards from their slots
Reseat Video card.
Is this a CRT [cathode ray tube] monitor of Flat screen?
cauzomb 02-01-2009, 10:38 PM Could be a videocard going bad, dirty connection, or the wire's between the video card and screen could be breaking from opening and closing alot. Doesn't sound like a software issue. What model laptop?
S Templar 02-02-2009, 04:56 AM Laptop!!
I missed that.
As said Video card likely suspect.
frodo 02-04-2009, 03:00 PM ok..video card....is this something that i can install myself?
or does this require a tech...and a clean room inviroment:D
just kidding..what am i looking at here?
also have another sympton, don't know if its related or not
its my curser.
the curser..is there supposed to be 2 of them on the screen?
i have the usual "line" that is right in front of the letters that i type
but..there is another seperate curser..it is where ever i leave it
right now its in the upper r h corner, but i need the other to move this one
if i move it using the enter button..is this making any sence at all??
if i wish to move my curse up, 4 lines. to fix something.
i have to put the other curser, up there. then click on it..then..move it out the way..confusing...
but...is there supposed to be 2 cursers? how do i make it go away?
cauzomb 02-06-2009, 12:24 AM Usually, in a word document or other text editor, there is a static or blinking "current position" cursur. There is also the MOUSE curser. When you mouse over a text box or while the mouse pointer is in the text box, the pointer changes into a curser. You can pretty much ignore the mouse curser, till you need to click where you want to edit/enter text etc.. As for the graphics card/ depends on what make/model laptop. If you post the make/model of your laptop, I can look into what parts or service might be available..
frodo 03-06-2009, 09:23 PM my cat knocked the computer off the table and it fixed itself,,REALLY!!!
frodo 03-06-2009, 09:30 PM but i have another problem, driving me nuts
my computer keeps freezing up and a window opens up
and says,,,,,this program is not responding
to return to windows and ckthe status of the program ,,,,,,,,,
it gives you 2 buttons to click, 1 is return to windows..does not work,,
the other is exit, shut it downit returns you to desk top
to stary over
this is poping up more and more..
cauzomb 03-08-2009, 12:30 AM If you get the error message again, post which program is not responding... Other than looking into the program causing the error, looking up the error report etc.. If the computer got knocked off a table and landed on a hard floor while it was running, there's a chance that the hard drive crashed.
Download HD TUNE from http://www.hdtune.com/
load it up, then run an error scan. If the error scan shows "bad sectors" "red blocks", it's likely that the drive crashed when the laptop hit the floor. If you do have "bad sectors" you will want to back up all your important data and replace the hard drive as soon as possible.
frodo 03-08-2009, 03:33 PM it was showing the error before, JR,Bug went crazy, I will try to do as you ask
and post back, thanks for answering
frodo 03-08-2009, 04:25 PM ok..loaded hd tune..ran it,,13.6 MB/sec average transfer rate
acess time 18.4 MS
burst rate 26.6 MB/sec
cpu usage 2.7%
all green blocks...
health status all ok
sounds good huh?
when i get the errer again, i go to control panel and open what? and document what?
cauzomb 03-09-2009, 01:03 AM naw, just post the actual message that you get. Sounds like your drive is OK
frodo 03-19-2009, 08:12 PM I can't post the actual message, cut and paste will not work when the message is displayedm the pc is frozen...but verbattem
this program is not responding
to return to windows an check the status of the program, click cancil
if you chose to end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data. to end the program now. click end now
when this pops up..the pc freezes up.click cancil and you return to the desktop
cauzomb 03-20-2009, 03:13 AM Without the error message showing what program, you'd want to check the event viewer for errors to see what program froze/stopped responding. If it's something that doesn't happen for a while, it's possible that the cooling fan stopped spinning, or the heatsink is dirty, that would cause the CPU to overheat = system crash.
frodo 03-20-2009, 04:20 PM viewing the event viewer
error Perflib event 2002
and Dhcp
hope that helps,i noticed the clock on the event timer does not match the clock on the computer..doesn't make sence to me, if you set the time,,the whole pc ought to be the same?
cauzomb 03-20-2009, 04:39 PM hmm, I guess you were on the right track earlier, since there's no program listed in the error message; when you get the pop-up again, hit control alt delete; open task manager and see which program has (not responding) next to it, make a note of that program and post it here, also check several times if it's the same program stopping each time you get the error... It may take a while but generally, if it's a heat issue, it would happen to random programs, basically, whichever app runs into the hot CPU,when it's hot enough to crash.
frodo 03-21-2009, 04:29 PM i was on a forum and it frozeup
i hit ctl,alt delete..task manager pops up and all itsays is not responding
I know that..next to it is the name of the forum i was on..and not responding
evidently i am doing something wrong? what do i do now?
cauzomb 03-21-2009, 07:18 PM You got it right, The name of the forum showing next to the (not responding) would be the URL that your browser was at. It means that your browser is not responding, crashed etc..
Have you got the error when using any offline applications? Do you know if the little fan on the back still comes on?
If you get the "not responding" error after using the laptop for a while, offline, it could mean that the CPU is overheating.
Try using the computer offline, use it for a while. Turn it on and let it sit for an hour or two, then start some applications, doesn't matter which program you use, as long as you are not connected to the internet or using your browser.
Try loading wordpad, let it stay open in the background, then open notepad, let it stay open in the background, then switch betwen the different applications, run hdtune once n a while, switch to wordpad/notepad, type stuff into the boxes, nothing specific, maybe play a round or two of solitaire or other application/game that you have installed. Hopefully this will be enough to heat up the laptop and cause the error while offline if it is heat related. You should be able to hear the fan come on from time to time, if you cant hear it come on, feel for hot air blowing out of the fan hole, or just watch it to see if it starts spinning. Hopefully it does spin, I was looking at the service manual for the laptop that you listed in a previous post. If this machine is the same laptop, dell latitude CPi A 366? the service manual shows a small cooling fan on the rear of the case, with the heatsink fins located behind the cooling fan. The service manual shows how to get at the heatsink but it's NOT easy, looks like it requires taking the whole chassis and other internal peices apart.
Shine a flashlight through the fan hole, you should be able to see the heatsink fins behind the fan. If it's full of dust, caked on the fan blades and heatsink, it will need to be taken apart and cleaned. Blowing through the fan will result in pushing dust further into the computer and is not recommended..
If you're not getting the error while offline, it could mean some part of the browser or networking subsystem is corrupted... This kinda issue is little more difficult to fix because the error doesn't show exactly what caused the browser to crash. The event viewer error is indicating that a program timed out, this could be due to several reasons, including corrupted files, bad registry entry, incompatible software on the website, outdated browser, incompatible security settings, or too many temporary files. Find the event error that you listed before, there should be more information listed, please either copy and paste the full error message, or write it down word for word in notepad, then copy past that to your next reply.
Since you mentioned that the machine took a fall, I'd recommend that you set yourself up on a solid work surface, non carpeted floor "to avoid static", make sure the laptop is shutdown and turned off, then unplug everything from the back/side of the laptop; touch one of the metal grounds on the back, usually there's some shiny lug nuts on one of the ports; this will do! Remove any accessory cards, optical media, floppy diskettes etc. then remove the battery, hard drive and memory module, you may need a small screwdriver to do this, then put everything back together. This is to ensure that all the connectors for the removable parts are properly seated.
itrush07 03-22-2009, 11:08 AM I also suspect that you already have a bad hard drive..
cauzomb 03-22-2009, 02:40 PM The hard drive checks out ok.
frodo 03-29-2009, 11:51 AM here is the error message...
End Program-Inside Projects-Forum Powdered By Eve
This program is not responding
to return to windows and check the status ofthe program, click cancil
if you chose to end the program immediately. you will lose any unsaved data.
to end the program now, click end now
ok\\\\\\\\ thats what pops up, if/when I click cancil,,,nothing happens,,zilch,,nada
and when i click end now...the program ends and the screen goes to the desk top
also..i failed to mention, that when this happens, every thing freezes up
nothing works, and then after a period of time, the errer message pops up
frodo 03-29-2009, 01:45 PM cauzomb....i went off line, and tried to make the error pop up
havent had any luck, will keep trying.. seems to error when on line:help:
cauzomb 03-29-2009, 05:18 PM That's good news and bad, good that machine isn't overheating, and also not damaged when it took a fall, bad news that there is likely browser/networking software issue that may be a little more difficult to figure out.
Did you notice if the cooling fan came on?
Have you done any MS updates, specifically related to internet explorer, or media player?
Have you tried clearing out temporary internet files?
There may be a corrupted temp file, active x control, cookie or some other part of the networking software that is corrupt, or not compatible with the website.
I have seen this happen on two other laptops, everything looks good, software is up to date, including java script, plugins, certificates anti-virus etc. On the other laptops, internet explorer browser is running and on certain websites, a popup error appears. In the top bar of the popup "this program is not responding, or an error has occured, this program needs to be shut down" With an option to "end now" clicking on end now results in the browser closing. Users were able to run internet explorer again, without restarting, but after a while the error would pop back up.
It might be some issue with the website or active x control that is not compatible with the browser or some browser plugin's. It could also be related to banner ad scripts designed to work with vista or other browser/plugin versions that time out with xp and internet explorer..
If clearing the temp files doesn't fix it, there are some other options to try, including removing 3rd party internet explorer add-on's, removing recent MS updates related to internet explorer or media player, or repair/reinstalation of internet explorer.. I found mention of re-registering some of the networking files via the start menu "run" box, also found mention of increasing some of the internet explorer timeout limmits via registry, or other application, but I don't want to suggest those just yet.
frodo 03-30-2009, 01:07 PM how do i know if the fan is on? where is it ?
thiserror messageis not on just 1 certain site,,its on any of them
i defraged my files about 2 mths ago,,
how do i delete temp files?
cauzomb 03-30-2009, 04:46 PM Fan location is mentioned a few posts back; it's on the rear of the laptop chassis, behind a little vent but it sounds like something is wrong with internet explorer, or the files that it is trying to load.. Before you delete temp files, can you run Hijackthis
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HiJackThis.exe
Select scan and create log file, then copy and paste the HJT log into your next post; along with what OS and what version of internet explorer you are using. Internet explorer version information is located in the the HELP tool bar menu of internet explorer. Open internet explorer, pres escape before it starts loading a website, so that it doesn't give you the popup error, then open the HELP toolbar menu located at the top of your internet explorer window, from the HELP menu select "About internet explorer", then note what version of internet explorer you have installed, post the version of internet explorer and what OS you are using. I'll take a look at your HJT log and how to repair your version of internet explorer, post instructions etc..
once you get your HJT log and other info posted you can go ahead and delete temp files.
To delete temp files, close all open windows and browsers, open windows control pannel, "start menu, settings, control panel" or something like that. From the control panel double click on internet options, then from the general tab of internet options, there's a "temporary internet files" section and there should be a button that says "delete files", click on the delete files button, then check the box that says "delete all offline content" then click on OK. When it is finished, exit internet options/control panel and restart the computer. Once the computer is finished booting, open internet explorer then browse some web pages and see if IE explorer still has the issue. Most likely you will still have the issue, but it's not a bad idea to clear the temp files on a regular basis. The reason I ask that you post another HJT log is that, it's possible you have got another infection, if there are no signs of an infection in the Hijackthis log, you may need to perform a repair/re-installation of internet explorer. I won't be back online till later tonight. Hang in there, if you need to browse the internet in the mean time, try downloading and installing an alternative browser like Opera or Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
http://www.opera.com/
Follow their instructions for downloading and installing a version that is compatible with your OS
