Hey Judy,

I ran this scan for my brother on his computer. He ran combofix and anti maleware scans.. Attached is the hijackthis log.

Can you please tell me what else I need to delete, etc? And what should I have NOT RUN at startup?

Hi Dom, Can you tell me WHY he ran these programs? Especially combofix. THis is NOT a program that should be run without specific direction to do so by somebody at a good forum helping to clean a computer. It is generally also run for specific problems and one must really know what they are doing before it is run. This is the thing that worries me a bit. I don't know what any of those logs showed or what those programs fixed. I need to know that before I can advise.
Judy

P.S. One thing I see immediately is his java program is WAY out of date. He needs to download the newest version (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) to the desktop, choosing Offline Install. Then he needs to go to Add/Remove and uninstall ALL older versions of java.
Then when he has done that he should install the new version.

Ok, I have no idea. But what should I do now?

Have him rescan..or? What do you reccomened

Can you get the logs of the programs he ran and post them here? Especially the combofix log? The programs log file will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
I really hesitate to recommend ANYTHING unless I know WHY he did this...problems he was having...and what actual scans he ran AND seeing the combofix log. If I would recommend something which would conflict with what was all ready done it could cause problems. I need to know what infections, actual names, were removed, and where they were located.

It was the whole little blurb that kept popping up in the right hand side..you may have a virus or whatever. and was running extreemmlyyy sloww, I will have him get it

Ok. I need to know what was on there, what was run and what was removed and by what. Especially that combofix log and also if he ran the Malwarebytes' program I will need that log also.

Hi Dom,
Sorry didn't reply quicker, have been away.
First of all he needs to update his java program, it is WAY out of date.
Have him go HERE (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and download the OFFLINE install file and save it to the desktop.
Next he should go to Add/Remove and UNINSTALL ALL older versions of Java showing there, a reboot may be necessary if so tell him to do so.
Then have him double click that java install file on the desktop to install the new version. Once that is complete then he should return to that download page and on the right side he will see Verify Now. Click that to verify the installation was complete.
Then he should run HJT again and place check marks next to the following entries;
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: Freeze.com Helper - {D6A99B1F-FAB9-4FA5-9C9D-D0D0CF846C05} - C:\Program Files\YourScreen\Freeze.DesktopManager.BrowserHelp er.dll (file missing)

O16 - DPF: {C9D7D239-B502-48B3-BA25-9DF8C7264073} (CCAWebLogin Control) - https://fsuccas1.ferris.edu/auth/CCALogin.CAB

Once all the check marks are in place click the Fix Checked button. Exit HJT, reboot the computer and run a new HJT scan, save the log and post back here.

Here ya go Judy,

Hey Judy, he said his computer just got really slow. Think he hit some spyware...

below are the updated logs.

jholland1964

Look Dom, he needs to update Malwarebytes' Anti-malware program the one he is using is way out of date. Plus what happened to his Norton program? It was showing in the very first HJT log but now it is not showing in these?
Are you actually at this computer or is this all being done via email or something?
I really need to be working with the person who is actually using the computer and via that actual computer if possible. There is too much "lag time" between posting instructions and then seeing results.
Obviously sometime in the last 5 days the Norton program has been removed. I would like to know what this guy has actually been doing to keep getting these infections...file sharing perhaps?

DomHennig
10-11-2008, 01:17 PM
Yes, Now I am here. I came here for the weekend.

www.sidereel.com to watch entourage. so basically it was a bad site to go to for the infection. Yes he deleted it..why IDK, but now I'm here so lets get down to business. I will update maleware bytes and run the scan and post it here.

DomHennig

Heres the updated:

Do you have a recommendation for a virus scanner now to download?

jholland1964
10-11-2008, 01:33 PM
First of all run that MBA-M again, this time do a FULL SCAN to be safe and have it fix or remove what it finds.
Now you say he "deleted" Norton...did he actually just delete it or was it UNINSTALLED?
Since he no longer has the Norton, or at least at this point that is what we think, you can find that out for sure, I would recommend either Antivir, Avast or AVG 8. All are free and do a good job. All are linked HERE (http://forum.networktechs.com/showthread.php?t=50)
I will need to see the next MBA-M log, a new HJT log too.

Dom, a picture isn't the way to do it, I couldn't enlarge it enough to read it. You can generate a full list with HiJackthis with the Uninstall Manager and then post it here as a regular post.
Do it this way:
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

Start HijackThis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply right here.

As far as programs you can uninstall, only one I would absolutely recommend you uninstall is Viewpoint Media Player. While not malware it is certainly considered foistware, because I doubt you chose to install it. It comes in with programs like AOL IM programs. You all ready have several perfectly good Media players on the computer there is no need for this one.
That said, I see nothing suspicous on the uninstall list you would really have to choose. If there is something on that list that you never use then by all means uninstall it.
Now for the auto starting programs in your HJT log I see these which definitely not required to run at start up, can use resources and can easily be run manually:
MSMSGS->>>Windows Messenger utility. If you don't use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. This is NOT an IM program.
Aim6->>Aol Instant messaging. Doesn't need to run on start up, can be started manually.
QuickTime Task->>>System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards, can be run manually
iTunesHelper->>>Installed with Apple's iTunes for Windows. Uses ~3-4MB of memory and if disabled in MSCONFIG or deleted from the registry it will re-instate itself after running iTunes a few times, true but if you keep an eye on it via CodeStuff Starter you can always keep it from auto starting.
TkBellExe->>>Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player. Not required
and this Service entry:
Viewpoint Manager Service but if you uninstall the Viewpoint Media Player this should be gone, if not just disable it.
I would advise you use the CodeStuff Starter program to disable all of the above.
