View Full Version : Computer starting to get clumsy

oxymoron

Hi this is my first post here. I will try to be as detailed as possible, if you guys need more info Pls PM me or reply.

Before i explain my information i must tell you the past. about 1 week ago i did a trend micro scan and it told me 3 malwares found TROJ_DLOADER.OZ (http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_DLOADER.OZ) ,
ADWARE_FASTERXP (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ADWARE_FASTERXP&btnG=Google+Search) , HKTL_IRCKEY.A (http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=HKTL_IRCKEY.A)
I don't have any other info about these... but in the end i got the message Successfully removed.
But the slow speeds still continued.. during the boot up and when opening programs..

Now i followed all the instructions and did all the scans and they are posted..

My pc is still slow.. even thought the scans show everything is clear but i suspect that its not.

Note: After the trend micro scan said "Successfully removed" i upgraded my XP to SP3..

and after the scans i removed MBA-M and installed Windows defender and did a disk defrag using a third party program: Defraggler
i also removed some useless personal files from my documents..

i am not sure how much inaccuracy might have been caused by the things i did above... but if you want me to undo anything or rerun the scans i would be happy to do so :) Also rememeber that i do not have any system restores because i removed them as instructed.

thank you.

Edit:
oo i forgot my PC specs: http://echeema.googlepages.com/computerspecs.html
only change there would be the: Security(now i use avast free av with COMODO firewall & windows defender), and Operating System(upgraded to SP3)

I really don't see anything in the logs indicating any infection. I do have to say, though it is too late, you missed the key sentence in the sticky concerning System Restore;
You will need to flush your restore points AFTER the fixing process has been completed to ensure that no malware is preserved.
If the system was running "clumsily" as you state the it System Restore shouldn't have been turned off. But as I said, it is too late now. Once the computer was running smoothly then would be the time to set the new Restore Point by turning it off and then Turning it back on.
It probably wasn't a good idea either to install SP3 until the computer was running smoothly, but it is done too.

I notice on your sytem specs that at one time you were running the McAfee Security Center. When you uninstalled this are you absolutely certain that all was removed? Did you do a file search to be certain that there were/are no remaining files which could still be running, even though they don't show in the logs? If not, I would recommend doing that just to be sure. This could account for the clumsiness you are experiencing.
About the only thing I can recommend you try is running a scandisk and having it fix any of the errors it may find. You might need your Windows XP CD for this.
Follow the instructions here;

well after uninstalling McAfee and removing all the files etc.. like 8 months ago.. the PC was running smoothly.. its only like in past few weeks that my PC has gone slow.. also maybe this is related to some hardware problem.. who knows..
and i just finished running the scandisk

Well it seems like its too late now :(

thanks anyway. :)

well as u said that my pc will not be fixed.
anyway you know the safest and fastest way to do a WinXP clean install.. without loosing any bookmarks.. important documents and not having to update windows XP like a million times and also restarting my PC again and again.. also the drivers need to be taken care of.

if you know some thing like SP3 being too heavy on my hardware etc..pls tell me..

I didn't say it couldn't be fixed. You say you ran scandisk, did it find files which needed fixing? If so, were they fixed?

if you know some thing like SP3 being too heavy on my hardware etc..pls tell me..
I doubt that, I just don't believe you should have installed SP3 on a computer you say was not performing correctly.
You can remove SP3 if you wish, following the instructions given here
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249)

Please post a complete discription of your hardware.

;I just finished reading your laptop specs..
;if you could list the drive ;space/size available,
;and your driver versions/total system memory
;and pagefile size used that would be great.
;ignore stuff below that's already in your system specs.

PC make/model, or combination of parts "CLONE" homebrew etc..

Motherboard: MAKE/MODEL
CPU: MAKE/MODEL
SYSTEM RAM:MAKE/MODEL, SIZE PER STICK, total SYSTEM RAM
HARD DISK: The one where your OS is installed on: DRIVE MAKE/MODEL, SIZE, Amount of FREE space on drive.
VIDEOCARD: MAKE/MODEL, driver pack version?
SOUNDCARD: MAKE/MODEL, driver version?
NETWORK CARD/MODEM: MAKE/MODEL, Diver version?
There are other things to look at but lets start with these for now... It's never too late.

Thanks for jumping in here cauzomb. Hardware is something I cannot give much advice about.
I did neglect to ask, is the Comodo firewall the only firewall being used?

oxymoron
05-19-2008, 01:26 AM
i disabled windows firewall and now i am using PC tools firewall plus... its faster.. sorry but i like this one better than comodo.. and note that Comodo firewall was installed after the computer started getting slow.. i just installed PC tooks firewall it seems faster but i am still testing it.

sounds good. You got plenty of system ram, and plenty of free drive space, that won't be the source of your slowdowns. Guess it comes down to application compatability; some apps don't like to work alongside the windows firewall. Some antivirus apps don't work well together, and some hardware driver/software packages have unecessary resource hogs as well.

Since your logs look good; and it seams to be more related to software, and partially resolved, I'm going to move this thread to the appropriate forum section. There will be a placeholder for this thread that will expire in 1 day, after that, it will be in the universal software section only.

I don't know that anyone said your computer is too old. You have not answered the question...when you ran scandisk did you tell it to fix and did it?
Have you defragged the computer lately? Have you emptied all the temp files? Have you updated all your drivers...via their specific manufacturers website, not Microsoft or Dell.
Did you consider removing SP3? Some people ARE having problems with it slowing their computers.
It would not be possible to do a FULL reformat and reinstall of XP without losing files, etc. But personally this is what I would recommend, especially if you have never done this. You can back up everything you have on the computer...documents, pictures, any personal items.
You would need your OS restore CD, the CD that has the drivers on it...basically anything you received from Dell when you purchased the computer.
It is your choice but a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new computer.
You didn't say, or if you did I missed it...is the computer only "clumsy" on line or is it all the time. Are there times when you notice this more than others...using specific programs for instance...if so, when?

well i have done every thing u told in the first paragraph, other than updating drivers.. i have no idea where to go.

i have not removed sp3.. and i dosen't seem to be the problem.
Can u recommend the best way to backup my files?
i do have all the cds (incd. OS and drivers) that came with my PC

and my PC is only clumsy during the boot up.. rest of the time it runs smoothly.

and also i have followed a few recommendations here(not all but the ones that seem reasonable): http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/f-guides-and-tutorials-65/t-software-speed-up-boot-and-start-up-time-xp-83795 (it will take a while to load the site.. they are having server problems.. how ironic lol)

and it did make a difference.. especially this site, mentioned in the article: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

i am not personally planing to restore my PC or buy a new one.. but its always nice to have a Plan B.

thank you.

Black Viper's tips are generally the ones I recommend. Since I don't know what else you did, though I did look through the link you gave, didn't see anything wrong or bad with their recommendations, but as I said I don't know which ones you used.
Well, it is your choice not to remove SP3 but I must tell you, one of the recommendations BEFORE updating with ANY service pack, SP3 included, is to make absolutely certain you have the most update drivers for all of your hardware. Though "clumsiness" is sort of a general term I must figure you mean the computer isn't running smoothly, most often this can be caused by an out of date driver.
To find out what hardware is on the system right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware. Then when the Device Manager opens it will show all the hardware installed on the computer. Double click each entry and the properties of it will open. It will tell you the Name Brand of each, choose the driver tab. It will show you the Driver Provider and the date the driver was installed and the driver version number. You should go to the manufacturers web site for each piece of hardware and look for a newer driver and download and install. Normally you install the new driver on top of the old. Some WILL have newer drivers than the ones you have installed and you will need the newest version. Some will not so you won't have to worry about those. I will stress, if at all possible get the manufacturers driver.
Display adapters can cause "clumsiness". Check the computer manufacturers site also. Plus you may need a BIOS update. All of these should have been checked BEFORE installing SP3.

ok so update the BIOS, Display adapter, sound?, processor, Network adapters?.

on dell's website it says: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

but i am not sure..

Not sure about what? Enter your system tag which should be on the sticker and you can have the Dell site scan the computer and give you a clearer picture of what is needed.

i did enter the tag and got the same results.
i think they used to have that update check service but now they canceled it, i am not sure if i should install the updates because last time i installed a update, it almost messed up the hardware.. like my graphic card was too stressed out after the update that it gave me the blue screen.. so i unintalled it.

Should i call dell and ask them about this?

I just was able to get info about my computer via the dell site. Are you certain you have the correct page?

ooo first let me apologize for my delay.

i had lot of work to do and couldn't find time. I am sorry.

next the dell site seems ok, hardware seems to be up to date.. not all but the important ones.

My PC is finally getting some speed. after trying some good software.. now i am using Nod32 and i like it.. its small. and comodo firewall + spybot (scanner, not active protection) seems to fit.

i think the case is closed, jholland1964 thanks for all your tremendous help. I wouldn't have any clue as to what was wrong.. you helped me point to the right direction, thanks.
if you got anything to add or you think that i am mistaken and need to take more steps pls reply. and the "Clumsiness" seems to have faded away during the startup. My old AV(avast free) was the problem(i think).

thanks jholland1964, have a nice day ;)
