len garden 12-09-2007, 03:57 PM g'day friends,
i have installed mozilla thunderbird.
what i want to do is use it to cut the spam mail i get through my web
host, not my isp who already blocks spam.
so far there is no reduction in spam from my web host e/mail account,
so i figure i haven't set it up properly, so need the helps of more
experienced computer users or thunderbird users?
i think my problem is to do with the <pop> and return <smtp> set up
part of the program??
i also don't understand how thunderbird works?
if i can itterate i need to moniot only the e/mail from my account i
have with my web host.

len garden 12-10-2007, 03:58 PM sorry friends,
thunderbird is another mail reader program, as it appears to me now?
don't need another reader.
looking for a spam stopper program say like the anti-virus programs
that monitor my e/mails coming in for viruses.
so is there a spam filtering program that can do the same?
apologies for getting it wrong.

Thunderbird has a built-in spam (Junk) filter. It works quite well, and
trains itself as you go. For the few that make it to your Inbox, you
highlight the header of the email, and click the Junk button.
You can further configure the Junk folder to self-delete anything in it
after [ nn ] days. I have mine set to [ 2] days.
Have you been to Tools > Account Settings and gone to the Junk Settings
and turned it **ON**? Also set it to reroute junk mail to the Junk
folder. You can also then right-click on the new Junk folder (in the
left pane), pick Properties and make intelligent options there.

You don't need to scan Incoming (or Outgoing) mail. As long as your
anti-virus program is running resident, it will prevent you from
executing any known virus attachments.

Perhaps, but you don't need it.

Doesn't MailWasher only work with OE? Len has Thunderbird. And
MailWasher has that nasty "bouncer" that people go crazy with, sending
bounce messages to the other spam victims whose addresses were forged in
the FROM field. That is *truly* nasty.
Do note in his original post, he said his ISP filters spam quite well.
The ones he is complaining about are from the address associated with
his web site.
I'm still waiting for him to answer that he has in fact blackholed the
"catch-all" address in the mail settings at his host's control panel.
That should cure his problem.

I've never had a spam problem so I don't know exactly how it works. I

[MailWasher] Yep, it catches spam, to a degree.

Remember that len said his ISP did a good job of catching spam. I feel
confident that the spam coming from his web site email address can be
blackholed, and solve his problem.
But I guess he left on a holiday.

This isn't a question of a better spam-trapper on your computer.
len, you said in your original post in this thread, "what i want to do
is use it to cut the spam mail i get through my web host, not my isp who
already blocks spam."
You have to capture the spam AT YOUR WEB HOST! (sorry for shouting)
You have to log in to your web site's control panel (possibly "cPanel")
and disable the CATCH-ALL setting. When enabled, all mail sent to your
domain name will come to you, even though you may only use
"len@example.com" (I don't know what you use, so I substituted
"example.com")
Spammers routinely blast their crap to:
webmaster@example.com
sales@example.com
info@example.com
slgielsghelwlalf@example.com
george@example.com
and so on, and you get it all.
You will get it all if you don't ::blackhole:: the catch-all. If you
don't know how to manage your web site host's control panel, write a
support ticket at the host's main or support pages and ask them how to
do it.
If you publish your email address on your pages, the spammer's
harvesters will also find it and send you spam. Google for "email
obfuscation".

so in short you are saying i will need to pay their exhorbitant fee to

as far as i can ascertain there is nowhere on the web hosts site even

my domain e/mail addy is not featured on my web page, i generally only
use the addy when i am doing geneology research and it is most likely
from those forums where all the spam mail is generating i would think?
some of the jargon used goes over my head, but i try to understand

login and i can't see anywhere that i can go and do as you suggest i
should?

Is this the address receiving spam?
Or something else. You now need to post the address, so we know (more

Hi Shaggy......
Being a genealogist of long standing, I now see where Len is most likely
getting his spam from. He probably is on some of the genie news groups,
but there are hundreds of Rootsweb Lists and Forums for genealogy and
they make no effort to hide their subscriber's addresses.
I ran a List for another outfit (British Genealogy) and no spammer could
get at the addresses. Rootsweb, however, is a whole other story. I
won't post how easy it is, but Len should be using a throw-away address
for anything connected with the above.
Cheers......Heather (and a Merry Christmas to you and yours)

Ah. Well, trying to get information from len reminds me of an old

Len also has a Guestbook on his web site. My opinion of them is that
they are a spammer's best friend, where they can harvest all those
hundreds of email addresses posted by the unsuspecting newbie.

How true. I thought of doing up a webpage, but the free ones seem to
have disappeared.....as in my ISP offered a free one a couple of years
back. But I am busy with yet another new "passion" this past year. I

Well that sure knocks the **** out of anything I get for
Xmas.......grin. I assume you are buying in the same area. Or are we
old enough to hit a retirement home......bwa ha ha. (that was a royal

Goodonya.....prices I should imagine are pretty low what with all that
subprime mortgage crapola you have down there. Up here prices are high
and my house has more than doubled in price. I would hazard a guess (ex
real estate agent here) that it has gone up $100,000 in 3 years. Sure
blows me away!!
Saw in the paper today that a condo apt. in Toronto is going for about
$200,000. Mind you, that condo is about 500 sq. feet. ACK!!

True enough about the low market prices. We did not get our asking price

come up with an offer anywhere close to what we wanted.

you have a good handle on the subject, unfortunately we need to be in
these forums and we need an e/mail addy or we dip out.
so could you explain the "throw away address" idea please?

Most reputable web/email hosters offer some sort of spam trapping
mechanisms with their service, at no additional charge. SpamAssassin is
popular, and comes 'standard' with the cPanel host software I've
mentioned. You still have to turn it "On".

Ah, so it *is* an address you set up in their 'control panels'. Go back
there, log in, and look for choices about blocking spam.

The solution is still the same.
Examine the TO: addresses in your spams. Are they all the same, or are
they sent to "webmaster@", "sales@", or other words you don't use.

You've already been advised that Thunderbird email client has built-in
Junk mail filtering, and been told that the default option is "Off" and
you have to turn it "On."

Heh. They do not say what sort of control panel software they use. I
wouldn't sign up with them unless I knew beforehand what I was going to
encounter.

It's not the forums causing the problem; it is the fact that you
published a working email address that appears on web pages, where the
spammers' bots (that's a robot program...) that scan all web pages found
it and added it to their list.
> so if i cancel my membership will the spam stop?
Cancel membership in geneology forums? No it will not stop; your email
address has already been harvested and is now on spammers' lists for a
very long time.

That was not the point. Your posting *guests* are leaving their own
email address in your guestbook, where *they* are being harvested by the
spam bots. That has nothing to do with your own personal spam problem.
It just creates spam problems for the unsuspecting posters.

i still see no problem with the guest book as the only working e/mail
addy i have connected to my page goes throuhg my isp who i must repeat
blocks spam so any spam i get on that addy is miniscual compared to my
addy with my web host.
i must repeat in 10 years i have had that guest book and that address
i have never had a spam problem such as this as described above.

No, *you* don't get spam from the guestbook, the people who are posting
their email addresses there are the ones getting it because they left
their emails in the clear, ripe for harvesting. These people:
buckaroo @ iinet.net.au
sallyb0 @ utas.edu.au
jasali10 @ netspace.net.au
kwgibbs1 @ alltel.net
and so forth. These are on your guestbook, and can/will be harvested so
*they* get spam. Newbies don't know the ramifications of posting an
address, on the web, in the clear. As you may surmise, I am
anti-guestbook for this reason.
> addy i have connected to my page goes throuhg my isp who i must

Right. That's why I was attempting to concentrate on you finding the
email options at your hosting service.
> i must repeat in 10 years i have had that guest book and that address

See above. The guestbook causes spam to be sent to the posters.
So, you are using "gardenlen2ATlensgardenDOTcomDOTau" at the geneology
pages: "my domain e/mail addy is not featured on my web page, i
generally only use the addy when i am doing geneology research" and it
is posted in forums, etc. It will continue to be harvested as long as it
appears on a web page.
> i may as yet give t/bird a try but not yet
Your choice, but the spam will continue until you do.
> as when i change host later next year this spam problem should lessen.

Not if you use the same email address with the new host's services.
That's why Heather said get a throwaway address for public posting. A
yahoo address, hotmail, gmail ... and if you start getting too much
spam, close it and get another.
I can't help you with anything else at this point.

spam mail ok, not that i don't have concerns about anyone getting spam
mail, but i would safely asume as their e/mail addies are not attached

any or most spam that might come their way is in fact being blocked as
my isp blocks spam on my other account.

Doesn't matter where your guests' addresses originated. ISP, web hosting
service, whatever. By allowing them to post, you set them up to receive
spam. Not everyone's ISP does a good job of filtering it.

G'day Len......
Yes, I have been into genealogy for a decade or more and have learned
the hard way how to get around the bots and spammers.
I use a GMail address for Genealogy and nothing else but that subject.
Google's spam trap is good and I rarely get a spam forwarded on to my
Outlook Express (Shaggy is now cringing at "OE".....lol). But I have an
excellent ISP which also grabs all of the junk mail as well. And I
happen to prefer OE over others. Hated Agent.
If you would like an invite to join GMail, then I will forward one on to
you. But before you even do that, please munge your news group address
to one something like mine..... "len AT nospam DOT invalid", for
instance.
So from here on in, you will NEVER use your real address on news
groups.....and you will set up either a Yahoo or Hotmail or GMail
account which will be used strictly for genealogy and maybe the odd
other thing. The hard part is trying to remember where you have put
your real address, considering any snippet you might get from it with
regard to genealogy.
My other bright idea years ago was to use a Yahoo account for any
registrations or subscriptions out on the world wild internet. The
reason it was *bright* is that no matter which ISP I change to, all of
my subbing info is on Yahoo and accessible from anywhere in the world,
actually.
So think on it and when you change ISP's, be VERY CAREFUL about who gets
that address. Switch all your subbing to Yahoo or Hotmail and dedicate
a GMail account to genealogy. I actually have all of the above and have
2 at Yahoo and 2 at GMail.
Whoops.....didn't mean to write an epistle. But one other thing. Yahoo
and Hotmail both have built-in virus checkers. So that is a plus. My
daughter has a Mac, so uses Yahoo as a just in case.....she doesn't use
an antivirus proggie.
The best antispam proggie is Mailwasher, in my opinion. You will find a
free one at C-Net, etc. I was checking the Firetrust site and they
don't seem to mention it, lol.
And do listen to what Beau/Shaggy tells you.....that is the straight
goods and he knows way more than me cuz he is WAY OLDER!! (VBG)
Probably younger, if the truth be known.
Cheers from Canada.......Heather

WOT??? We are getting set for a *itch of a storm from the US this
weekend.....and if we are lucky, it will hit the US right about your
house!! Which is as it should be, lol. We drove around that area you
are moving to eons ago, btw. Lovely country. But we don't often cross
the border. Especially now what with all of the crapola we have to go
through. Sheesh, we are not furriners!!
You will have to come up to Quebec City this summer. 400th anniversary
from discovery (Cartier?) and we were planning on holidaying there
before I realized it would be inundated with Merkin tourists!!
Daughter arrives on Saturday, so thankfully will get in before the
blizzard hits. Unless it detours to your area.
Hope the move goes well. I can't downsize.....too much junk after all
these years. (G)
Cheers......Heather

Your guestbook email addresses? Didn't you notice I separated all the
"@" signs with spaces? The harvester bot won't see them as IDs. It is
also said that the Usenet bots only read headers, not bodies.
Ahem. Where yours is plainly visible to the bots. Already harvested.

Certainly I can. But I understand that you didn't know about it.

AFAIK, the harvesting bots don't read Java, so look into a JS solution to
posting an addy. They willl get it soon enough, so stay ahead.

Welcome to the thread.
You meant JavaScript, not Java. They are two different things.
If you use JavaScript to display a contact address, the ~10% who have it
disabled or stripped by a corporate firewall won't see it.

Yep JS is what I meant, and a ;ot of corp firewalls have very specific
restrictions on it...addy just might work, but point taken.

len garden 01-02-2008, 12:22 PM thanks for all the possible suggestions of help, all too tech' for me
and without full button by button direction that is the way it will
be.
anyhow i went to the t/b link provided so many posts back and got
absolutley nowhere, i can say one of the sorst sites i have ever gone
to for help, they kept confounding the situation by asking the same
questions over and over so i tried answering them in different ways,
but absolutley hopeless lot.
anyway t/b has been uninstalled off of my machine, i'll put up with
the bit of onconvenience for now untill i cahnge hosts to one who has
reasonbly priced blocking available.
