Hi there, I use a ASUSTek A7V600-X (ancient, yes i know) and I recently thought about updating my cpu, AMD Sempron 2600+ (again, ancient i know). I've searched on google and what came up was that my mobo uses a Socket A or Socket 754 for cpu's. My problem lies in figuring out what to do about this because I've seen threads that say socket 462 is the same as socket A.
I'm confused right now about the whole thing and whether 462 will work with a socket 754. Also confused about whether 754 or 462 or both will work on a socket A. I'm planning to get an AMD Athlon XP 3000+(socket 462, a) or a 3700+ (socket 754), depending on which one my mobo will support. Help me out here. Thanks!

Well, from the information that I can deduce at the moment (Asus' site seems to be malfunctioning) you HAVE to have a socket A CPU to fit in your current motherboard.
Their page for cpu support isn't loading: http://www.asus.com/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx
NO, the Socket 754 CPU will not work.

Well the thing is that this page [edit~comercial site link removed]shows my mobo supporting socket 754. I don't know if this is a trustable source or not because I cannot find my mobo on the ASUS page.
What is socket A then? Is that 452? Because I don't see that on the ASUS page either.

Socket A is also known as 462. I HIGHLY doubt that a socket 754 CPU will fit in that motherboard.
I would double-check with Asus' website when it comes back up, but I think you are better off looking at a Socket a CPU.

Here is the manual: http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/kt600/a7v600-x/e1873_a7v600-x.pdf
Here's your answer right from the manual:
The motherboard provides a Socket A (462) for CPU installation. AMD processors offer gigahertz speeds to support all the latest computing platforms and applications. The A7V600-X supports Athlon XP, AMD Athlon, AMD Barton, and AMD Duron Processors.

Oh I see... one more question (sorry to bother you): any idea what the fastest socket 462 cpu is? From what I found while searching, it is the Athlon XP 3000+. Please verify, thanks! :)

xp3200+ barton/MOBILE lower power version, pretty much any 2400+ barton/mobile, 2500+, 2600+ will run 3200+ speeds; my 2500+ runs 3200+ Your milage may vary.

No it is not. Socket 754 is different than AM2. 754 is actually 2 generations older than AM2.
