since our malware lady didn't pick up on this (atleast on the home page), I noticed the article on slashdot. they mention both maxtor and seagate.

I have a seagate 300 gig external and was wondering if anyone has a link to a list of serial number effected? I really dont want to try to cleanup 200 gig worth of data if there is nothing there to clean.

Didn't hear about that one...just another reason that I build my own ext. enclosures...;)

from what I gather, the hdd is infected, not the enclosure..

granted if I would have just formated the hdd to begin with, I wouldn't ahave anything to worry about but I was lazy and didn't.

I was going to say...I always format the drive when I get it...and if you build the enclosure yourself, you have to format so....

I would find it weird if I buy a brand new drive and its already formatted AND has files on it, specially an autorun.

We really need to stop importing stuff from china. Kids products with lead, HDDs with viruses preinstalled... what next? Oh I know, pencils that break easily... seriously they make the crappiest pencils. We have the lumber AND mining industry, no reason why we can't make our own!

That's ridiculous. That's why I always format my stuff before I use it. I don't trust too many autorun programs or preloaded files.

Yeah thats the problem, they only care about the money. Sure a few kids might get hurt in the process (either the end user, or factory worker) and people might die, but they're still making money. :rolleyes:

Don't disagree with moving this post, but I think if there's link's to the orginal article or some such thing; it should go in the news section!

And for my comment, I'm not suprised, I've seen it come in compact flash/thumb drives and even external hardware devices "not related to storage" with "auto-play" to try to connect to the internet and download drivers and software; except windows has support and default driversthat work on the devices, and the only version of windows that allows the plug and play hardware to connect to the internet for drivers is the one that comes with the correct drivers for the devices.....

This kind of application behaviour sets the stage for security exploits;
