I am getting some icons arrive on the destop bottom right toolbar in Win XP which are black squares with a red frame containing the letters Ffv in red.
Can anyone tell me what they are? I have Googled but with no results so far.

Sounds like Directshow decoders/codecs config to me.

You probably have this installed:
FFDShow codec
